Volunteer Opportunities
Want to work with us?
Chthonic Lit is a fairly new and very small publication who is fiercely independent. Our team is currently only a group of 3, but if you’re interested in becoming a part of the fun, see below for open opportunities!
At this time, all positions are volunteer based. We run on grit, ambition, and a drive to pursue the uncanny.
Open Positions:
Business and Development Manager
We are looking for someone to join us on the ground floor to help shape the future of Chthonic Lit by building the business side of our operation.
The Role:
The Business and Development Manager will be the spine that keeps us together for years to come, setting up our finances, guiding us through the world of grants and funding, and laying the groundwork for sales and distribution. You’ll help us figure out how to not only survive, but grow this strange and dark literary publication.
What You’ll Do:
Financial Foundations
Build and manage a basic budget for the magazine
Help us understand GST/PST registration, taxes, and best practices for small presses in Canada
Work with us to develop pricing models for issues and subscriptions
Funding and Grants
Research and identify relevant grants and funding opportunities
Work with the founder to develop and submit grant applications
Advise us on eligibility, reporting, and timelines
Sales and Growth
Develop strategies for selling/distributing issues (bookstores, website, subscriptions, etc)
Explore partnerships, sponsorships, and collaborations
Support marketing strategies to grow our readership
Who We Are Looking For:
Someone with experience in small business operations, publishing administration, or nonprofit management
Knowledge of Canadian arts funding and grant-writing
Financial literacy (budgeting, pricing, basic taxes, etc)
An interest in speculative or literary publishing is wonderful, though not required
Independent, organized, and excited by the challenge of helping an emerging magazine grow
Why Join us?
This is currently a volunteer role, but one with real creative influence. We are a small team, which means we listen to each other and help out whenever possible. You’ll be stepping into Chthonic Lit at its dawn, so your voice and expertise will directly shape the magazine’s future. For the right person, this is a chance to combine financial/business skills with the thrill of building a strange and ambitious literary project from scratch. And we would love to give you a glowing reference in the future if ever needed.
Commitment:
This volunteer position is part-time and flexible! None of us are very finance or business savvy, we truly just need a guiding hand. And selfishly, we would love to grow our team and meet some cool new people.
It is a remote position, based in Canada only please. If you’re in Vancouver, there is the opportunity to meet up!
Email us at saltandcitruszine@gmail.com with a cover letter and resume. We look forward to hearing from you!
